BAC'S ADVICE CORNER Sometimes parents, coaches, and athletes have questions and are looking for advice. In this space I will post their question and my suggestions.
Dilemma:
-
Looking for some words of wisdom...my oldest son is playing baseball and sitting the bench. It’s hard to watch. You try to assess the situation and ask yourself what can he do differently? I keep the stats on my own. My parents always did in case we had questions about our game. When he gets out there he does well. No errors. Makes contact. I have to believe it has something to do with what is or is not happening in practice. He carries the equipment. He keeps the pitch count. He base coaches. He never has sat an inning until this year. I look in the dugout, his head is in the game. He is discouraged but determined not to let it show. He pitched to two batters in the last inning of the game. We were down by 4, bases loaded and only one out. First batter popped out and he struck out the number four batter. Do I encourage him to go to the coach? He is unsure whether it will make it worse. I am thinking it can't get worse. What do you think? Trying to wrap my head around it. Thanks BAC. I feel better now anyway. Lov Wendy

That's a tough one, Wendy. The problem is, he doesn't know why the coach isn't playing him more. And sometimes coaches make decisions based on their own idiosyncrasies. Without communication between your son and the coach, your son will never know why he is sitting on the bench. I strongly encourage him to talk to the coach, in a respectful manner. He needs to know what the coach is looking for in his athletes; what does an athlete do to get playing time? And specifically, what does the coach want your son to do to get more playing time. I think it's important that the coach knows your son wants to play more and is willing to work to be able to do it. Unfortunately, sometimes it doesn't have anything to do with attitude or ability, but some quirky thing with the coach. I have seen a coach who didn't play athletes because she had something against size and had a belief that if they were small, they just weren't going to be able to handle the sport, even though they were very capable.
Good-luck, Wendy! Let me know how it goes.
